Top 10 Brunch Spots in Brooklyn

Whether you’re a young professional in your mid-twenties, middle-aged entrepreneur, accomplished businesswoman or have a family, brunch has become quite the popular choice when it comes to weekend morning outings in Brooklyn—and there are plenty of spots from which you can choose. No longer is breakfast simply “just breakfast” or something you grab on the go, but a decadent and all around enjoyable experience.

Tom’s Restaurant

Tom’s Restaurant, family owned and operated since 1936, is one of the most sought after spots for brunch in Prospect Heights. It’s so popular that sometimes the line to be seated can lead out the door and spill onto the sidewalk (and while you wait they pass out fresh orange slices to tide you over). One unique offering of this restaurant is the extensive selection of pancakes, which includes banana walnut, lemon ricotta, sweet potato, chocolate chip and the list goes on. They also have a wide range of flavored butters to smear on top of the pancakes. Additional choices on the menu include omelettes, eggs florentine, eggs benedict, and several other classic brunch options. The kitschy diner feel and laidback atmosphere also contributes to the overall experience of this restaurant. Esme

Esme in Greenpoint is more of a swankier version of the typical brunch. Not only is careful preparation regarding the flavor of the food thought about for every plate, but also presentation. Some of the delicious meals up for grabs include the pork belly eggs benedict, the fried chicken sandwich and the grass-fed burger. For those who are vegetarian, they also have several options, such as veggie sausage and a veggie burger. Their brunch cocktail menu available is also special with drinks like Pimm’s cup, mimosas, bloody marys and more. They also have a fine selection of mostly local craft beer, wine, coffee and soft drinks. (999 Manhattan Ave)

Piquant

Piquant in Prospect Heights is a fancier brunch spot known for its elegant touch and ambiance. The owners knew what they were doing when they named the restaurant, as the definition of “piquant” is having a pleasantly sharp taste or appetizing flavor. As you enter the establishment you notice the exposed brick along the walls, a lengthy bar, candlelit tables and there’s even an ample-sized back patio. While there are fewer options on this menu, all the plates were designed to flavorful perfection. Some of the more unique dishes include cornflake crusted French toast, the smoked salmon bagel and the signature piquant burger. They also have the classic options, such as two eggs any style, steak and eggs, and buttermilk pancakes. As far as drinks go, they have a $10 one hour special for unlimited bloody marys, mimosas or sangria. Reservations are advised. (259 Flatbush Ave)

Olea Mediterranean Taverna

Olea in Fort Greene is a Mediterranean eatery that was opened in 2005 by three friends. As you walk into the place you’ll notice it has a whimsical gypsy feel with the stucco walls, a wooden ceiling, vibrant looking plants, along with terra cotta and mosaic tiles. Some of the unique brunch dishes they serve include green eggs and lamb, Turkish breakfast, a smoked salmon plate, lamb sandwich and a chorizo and manchego “frico” sandwich. Also on the menu are fresh baked chocolate croissants that will make your mouth water. For drinks they have four kinds of mimosas: OJ, raspberry, mango and pomegranate, and two kinds of sangria: classic red and mango white. (171 Lafayette Ave)

Allswell

Allswell in Williamsburg is a cozy little spot for brunch. The place has a rustic cottage feel with the wooden tables and walls decorated with an array of different colorful patterns. Their weekend brunch menu changes regularly, but for right now they are offering cinnamon toast, avocado toast, an egg & cheese sandwich, frittata, pancakes, clam chowder, crispy chicken sandwich, Royalton Farms cheese burger and something called the rainbow sandwich, which contains beet, carrot, feta and caraway. This place also has sweets like apple and caramel tarts with vanilla ice cream and affogato, a delicious coffee-based dessert. Customers seem to rave about the bloody mary here as well. Heavy Woods

Heavy Woods in Bushwick is a place that serves brunch every day starting at 11 a.m. Some of the unique dishes they offer are the dutch baby with caramelized apples, black and tan griddle cakes, a buttermilk biscuit egg and cheese sandwich, the “bacon torpedo” burrito and the “porto-pedo” burrito. They also make a bunch of delectable sweets and smaller sized snacks, which include chocolate-peanut butter coffee cake, banana bread walnut bread, duck confit-blue cheese scone and cherry-chocolate scone. There’s a full bar with specialty cocktails available, bloody marys, mimosas, bellinis, beermosas and more. They also have plenty of coffee options, along with unique drinks, such as the peanut butter latte, maple latte and Irish coffee. (50 Wyckoff Ave)

Buttermilk Channel

Buttermilk Channel in Carroll Gardens has a wide variety to choose from when it comes to their brunch. First off they have a snack menu that includes grapefruit wheels, a walnut sticky bun, house-made pickles and maple & bacon roasted almonds. As most brunch spots do, they have their egg dishes, but on their menu they have an entire list of what they call “scrambles,” which are scrambled eggs served up with different things, like house-cured lox, green onion and cream cheese; hot sausage, peppers and onions; or roasted mushrooms, spinach and goat cheese. The bigger entrees a few unique plates, such as pecan pie French toast, rancho gordo heirloom bean stew, fried pork chop & cheddar waffles, and, of course, they have buttermilk pancakes, as the restaurant’s name suggests. To top of their impressive food menu, they also offer a variety of bloody marys: the classic, the court street, star of the sea and the Otis. They also have mimosas and bellinis as well. Le Barricou

Le Barricou is a French bistro located in Williamsburg with a casual and relaxed feel, reminiscent of restaurants in Paris that are slower paced to allow for indulgence in the experience of dining out. This establishment does a weekday and weekend brunch. Some of their entrees include frittata auvergnate, eggs benedict, eggs Norwegian, croquet madame, pancakes, French toast, onion gratinèe, pate sandwich and grilled burger. Along with coffee options, they also have a bunch of freshly squeezed juices that include orange juice, grapefruit juice, pineapple and cranberry. The cocktail selection includes the house made bloody mary, shrimp cocktail bloody mary, mimosa, bellini and kir royale. There is also outside seating at this restaurant as well. (533 Grand St)

Sidecar

Sidecar has one of most unique brunches around. Brothers John and Bart DeCoursy own the spot in South Slope, which opened its doors in the summer of 2006. The place serves up what they call “French Redneck” cuisine paired with handcrafted cocktails. Their brunch menu includes small plates, such as oysters, fried oysters, gravlax and hangover soup, which is spicy chicken broth, tomato, kale, garlic with a poached egg. The big plates on the menu are fried chicken & waffles, corned beef hash & eggs, shrimp and grits, steak and eggs, French toast, and more. They also offer up cleverly named cocktails, such as The Real Housewives, The Jesuit and Femme Fatale. (560 5th Ave, New York)

Miriam

Miriam is another restaurant offering up brunch every single day. This place does breakfast right with diverse menu options. They have a huge selection of plates made with organic eggs, including eggs benedict, Norwegian eggs, eggs Florentine, smoked salmon omelette and more. There are also other special picks not seen elsewhere very often, like chicken shawarma, a falafel platter and lamb shawarma. However, they have classic brunch favorites as well, like pancakes and French toast. The choices from their a la carte menu are vast with things like a chicken snitzel, roasted beet, steak & eggs, couscous & vegetables and a Merguez sandwich. The drink menu includes a select few cocktails, such as the ginger crisp, cucumber Olè, hot spiced cider and red sangria, along with a long list of fine wines. (79 5th Ave, Brooklyn)
